An EM 385-1-1 8-hour course is designed as an annual occupational safety and health refresher for the Site Safety Health Officer (SSHO) of any construction project required to comply with EM 385-1-1 1 Safety and Occupational Health Requirements.
Engineering Manual (EM) 385-1-1 contains the safety and health standards that apply to projects overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Generally speaking, military and civilian projects that receive federal funding are required to follow EM 385-1-1 as the primary occupational safety and health document instead of OSHA.
Which EM 385-1-1 Training Course Do I Need?
Anyone who is required to comply with EM 385-1-1 needs relevant training of some sort. EM 385-1-1 may also apply to state or local public works projects when they’ve received federal funding.
The initial EM-385-1-1 course you need depends on your role and level of responsibility in the project. Most workers – those without supervisory duties – can take the 16-hour version of the course, while managers, supervisors, and crew leaders need the 24-hour course for Collateral Duty Safety Officers (CDSOs).
A project’s Site Safety Health Officer (SSHO) is required to take an initial 40-hour course, followed by an annual EM 385-1-1 8-hour course that serves as a refresher. This course fulfills the EM 385-1-1 refresher requirements.
