FAQs
What Is EM 385 40-Hour Course Certification?
First, while you may hear the term certification in relation to EM 385 40-hour training, it’s not technically accurate because no official certification is granted (or required). Typically, if you hear someone say you need “EM 385 40-hour course certification,” they mean you need to earn a certificate of completion for a 40-hour EM 385-1-1 training course.
EM 385 training is a type of course that teaches the safety and health standards that must be followed by any project with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) oversight. Engineering Manual (EM) 385-1-1 is the most up-to-date version of USACE safety requirements.

Supervisors, crew leaders, or managers who are not SSHOs (collectively referred to as Collateral Duty Safety Officers or CDSOs) can satisfy their initial training requirements with the 24-hour EM 385 course. For non-supervisory employees, the 16-hour course is sufficient.
Once an SSHO has completed their initial 40-hour EM 385-1-1 training, they’re required to stay current by taking the 8-hour EM 385 refresher course at least once a year.
